My Globe Visibility (Tattoo) Now Connects

I’ve been saying most of the time in the past that 3G modem for internet connectivity sinks.

In my reviews on the performance of Globe Visibility (Tattoo) and Smart PlugIt, internet connection is usually unstable. Though it can reach the more than 1Mbps strength, as the telcos have promised, but it only stays there for a while. I said “for a while“– about 2-5 seconds. :)

But lately my 3G connection, using Globe Visibility (Tattoo), is improving. I have noticed this when i’ve started seeing the beacon light of the nearby Globe cell site blinks at night. I presumed the cell site is now activated.

The telcos have made it clear that 3G modem internet connection can be variably changing due to its cell site load from 3G connection of the mobile phones.

My connection is now at a conservative 100kbps+ both download and upload while the transport rate and receive rates are going up and down from 100kbps to more than 1Mbps speed.

globe speed

The Receive Rate (lower right of the Globe Visibility app manager) reflects a 1.2Mbps speed while the Transport Rate is only at more than 20kbps. However, the internet speed as measured by www.speedtest.net is at 270kbps download and 100kbps upload. Also, in the screen shot, the signal strength as received by my 3G modem is at 4 bars (it used to be at 3 bars only).

Gloo– to glow?

Globe opens today a new social networking site from a developer who won in the Globe Labs Challenge in August 2008 providing an alternative to Facebook, Friendster, and others.

It’s the Gloo. A place where you and your friends can share video from YouTube, Facebook pictures, and web images in real time. See the screen shot of the homepage below:

Gloo

Originally named Berkspace, Gloo also has a chat feature and let people do free form text and post-it. It can even send SMS and MMS to mobile phones. Berkspace’s radical and unique idea won the Best Social Networking Application in the GlobeLabs competition.

Anything you post in the spaces in Gloo can be moved and resized by you or by your friend in real time.

With the rising popularity of Facebook in the Philippines and the millions of fanatics of Friendster, Gloo will surely have a hard time glowing in the net space.

I just created my account in Gloo and i’ve done creating a space named– juntariman. I have yet to send invites to my contacts to visit Gloo. Though, i have yet to do something in my space. See you there!!!!

Getting Rid of Duplicated Files in our PC

One of the messes in my laptop is duplicated music file– same songs in different folders. It’s so tasking to look for duplicated files manually. There must be a program to do it for me. I then remember the PC REPAIR SYSTEM that contains a program–DOUBLE KILLER, sounds like a murderer!

Double Killer is one of the 37 utility softwares that are found in the PC Repair System which you can download from this site. It scans your system and will list down all duplicated files (with 2 or more copies). You will be given an option which copy of the files should be deleted.

Double Killer

Deleting unnecessary copy of a file gives us extra space in our PC. So, try the software for free.

Twitter: What are you using?

There are many twitter clients–either desktop or browser-based application– to send your tweets to micro-blogging network–twitter logo.

Of course, you can directly tweet at the Twitter site which everyone of us did it for the first time. I’ve tried at least two Twitter clients but settled down to Twitterfox–an extension of the Mozilla Firefox browser. Twitterfox has changed its name to Echofon. Click here to download Echofon.

Here are the features of the Echofon as detailed in Mozilla.org with some screen shots of my browser’s Echofon app:

Echofon-1 Echofon adds a tiny status bar icon that notifies you when your friends post tweets. You can also view updates in a timeline and post your own tweets.

X – click to close  but minimize the app to the status bar of the browser.

juntar (or your name) – click to change twitter account

echofon – click to go to Twitter site

echofon logo (lower bottom) – click to toggle the app

Friends tab – shows the tweet of your friends

Echofon-2 Mentions tab – shows the replies and re-tweets (RT) of your tweets

Echofon-3 Messages Tab – shows private messages sent to you.

Echofon-4

Button – click to insert current URL of the opened tab of your browser into the message box. See sample URL in the message box.

Just press ENTER after writing the tweet and Echofon sends your tweet immediately.

Noteable Features:
- Unread count in Firefox status bar.
- One-click access to Twitter window.
- Easily post links to current page in Firefox.
- Instant notification of new Tweets, within Firefox.
- Allows for multiple Twitter accounts
- Handles all the standard Twitter tasks such as direct messages and mentions.
- Syncs unread tweets with your iPhone when you use Echofon Pro for iPhone.
- auto pagination
- Combine sequence tweets

Again, i preferred the Echofon app since it’s light, compact, fast and almost real-time, no-hassle and my tweets will also go to my status message in Facebook.

Lifehacker has listed “Five Best Twitter Clients” as enumerated in the screen shots below. Click the link for the reviews and the images for the individual site of the Twitter clients.

twitter-peek

Maybe you can try this Twitter-dedicated device. It’s the TwitterPeek from Twitter, Inc. and Peek, Inc. It can only send tweets wirelessly. It cost $99 a unit plus a monthly service fee for the network it connects. In the Philippines, Globe offers P20/day unlimited tweets.

A New Battery Pack and a Recycled Portable Hard Drive

Maybe i’m one of the luckiest guy today–why? I’ve got a brand new battery pack for my laptop and a recycled portable hard drive. The catch–it’s all for free. :) Thanks to my brother Rolly who just arrived from China in time for his birthday today–Nov. 2.

batpakThe original battery pack of my lap top has been damaged for few months now. It’s an ASUS Li-Ion Battery Pack A32-F3 (Rating: 11.1v; 4800mAh). During the time it’s not being replaced, i can’t use my laptop without using the AC adapter.

batpak-2The replacement is an exact unit with the same specs. It’s priced 40RMB or about P2,800 here in the Pinas. But still it’s cheap considering the local price here of same battery pack is estimated at about P8,000.

portable hdd-2My first and only portable hard drive is a recycled one from the laptop of my brother Rolly. However, it’s an original and reliable Toshiba HDD with 40G space. My brother upgraded his laptop into a 250G storage.

portable hdd-3The old one taken out from its mount inside his laptop is now being clad in a new casing (Samsung brand) that can be connected to my laptop using a two-prong USB cable. You can also make a portable HDD out of the storage of  your old laptop by housing it in a casing like the one i’ve shown here.

portable hdd-4It’s already partitioned with three existing drives: one for the programs and two drives for the files. I reformatted the drive which was used for the programs to gain more space and deleted some old files in the other two drives.

portable hdd-5I have to scan first the drives for presence of malwares and viruses. There were 106 malwares found in the first drive including Potentially Unwanted Programs, Cookies, and Trojans.

I also reformatted the program drive to erase whatever applications are there since i’m not going to use all of it. While retaining some image and music files in the other two drives.

Portable HDD

So, i have a new place for all my audio archives of my radio shows– Hi-Tech Ta Bai and Kapamilya Negosyo Na. I also intend to put a back-up, in folder packages, all my powerpoint presentations of my lessons in masscom at the University of San Jose Recoletos. Thank God for the blessing today.

Is Your PC Windows 7-ready?

I tried checking whether my Asus F3H Series laptop is ready for the latest Microsoft operating software-Windows 7. My current system is Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2 with Intel Celeron M CPU 520 @ 1.60GHz, 1.48G RAM.

First, i had to download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from the Microsoft official site and install it to my system. The executable file is 8.26MB.

windows 7 upgrade advisor icon After installing it, i’ve got this shortcut icon on my desktop.

In my case, i had to install first the Microsoft.NET framework 2.0 before i can proceed with the installation. It took few minutes before i finally had the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on my system. I then proceeded with the scan and have these compatibility issues which i should address to before deciding to migrate to Windows 7:

windows 7 upgrade advisor screen

windows 7 upgrade advisor screen-2

windows 7 upgrade advisor screen-3

windows 7 upgrade advisor screen-4

windows 7 upgrade advisor screen-5

As you see in above screen-shots, there are nine issues that i have to address to before considering Windows 7 installation while 3 applications are not compatible with(marked X). There are 2 system requirements passed, 17 devices listed as compatible, and 11 programs listed as compatible.

You can also run some Windows XP productivity programs under the Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions.

Microsoft listed these Top 10 Reasons to move from Windows XP to Windows 7 :

windows 7 10 reasons

Try checking your system for Windows 7-readiness. There’s no harm in trying. Anyway, you can uninstall the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor later.

My Struggle Over Internet Speed

I was shocked reading an item in a news letter stating that “their internet charge of P150/hour is very much affordable with a free cup of coffee“. Huh? P150/hr in an internet cafe? I continue reading the article and it seemed the item is consistent with the figure–P150/hr.

Not contented, i went over the banner and saw the year the publication was published–1996. :) I was reading a very old issue of a newsletter. Anyway, it gives me some sort of info how costly was the internet surfing over 10 years ago.

On Thursday/October 29 was the 40th birthday of the Internet. Here are some facts about the net:

  • University of California, Los Angeles, professor Leonard Kleinrock, headed the team that first linked computers online on October 29,1969.
  • However, it was on September 2, 1969 when two computers of the ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Net) were connected to form a network run by the U.S. military.
  • The first message “LOGIN”(to log into the distant computer) failed. After engineers began typing LOG, the distant computer crashed after getting the “O”. So, the first internet message was “LO”.
  • Email first emerged in 1971 while the first file transfer was done in 1973 within the ARPAnet.
  • The first commercial use of the internet was authorized only in 1988 after it was first used in government and institutional agencies.
  • The team that worked first on the internet never imagined Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.
  • The net is penetrating every aspect of our lives today.
  • Kleinrock: “As a teenager the internet is behaving badly, the dark side has emerged. The question is when it grows into a young adult will it get over this period of misbehaving?”

Over the years, i have struggled getting a better internet speed at home using various means and internet platforms:

  • PLDT VIBE2006 : I’d been connecting to the net via dial-up using a PLDT landline and some prepaid cards from various ISPs. The actual connection speed was a dismal 40-52kbps.

  • motorola L72007 : I connected my PC with a Motorola L7 phone unit as its modem. The connection speed via the GPRS network is a little over the dial-up.

  • SMART BRO CANOPYLater part of 2007 : We’re able to tap SmartBRO (canopy type) in my parent’s house with an average internet speed of 100+kbps (upload) and 300+kbps (download). However, the signal is not so stable.

  • globe broadbnd2008 : Our house in Tabok, changed court by using Globelines’ broadband with an upgraded speed of 1.2Mbps (Plan P1,299/mo.) The average speed is superb: 500kbps+ (upload) 700kbps+ (download). Signal is quiet stable except during system failures.

  • smartbro-globevisibility2008 : I started using 3G modem from Smart PlugIt and Globe Visibility. The signal strength is erratic from no service to only 3 bars in most places. While the internet speed is very unstable, from 0kbps -1.6mbps. It can reached as much as more than 1mbps but it will stay there for 2-5 seconds only on the average.

I wished i could get a wired internet connection at home to stay online steadily everyday. Wish ko lang. :)

(a special report from a volunteer)

The article below has been the subject of denial by the Department of Social Welfare and Development in recent days. It caused stir among the media and the people who show concerned and sympathy to typhoons “Ondoy” and “Peping” victims.

It is written, in her blog, by book author and blogger Ella Rose who stands by her claims. Click here for the story including the denial and explanation of Social Welfare Esperanza Cabral.

Here it is….

Dear friends,

I’m asking your help to spread the word. Tulungan po ninyo akong ikalat ito. Beyond this, we should also demand action. I disabled a plugin so you can copy the photos of relief goods rotting in DSWD warehouses. You can link this post to your blogs, facebook, websites etc. You can also email the photos.

Philippine News (US based Philippine newspaper) will use this as its front page story this week. Every Filipino has the right to know where the tons of donations from the UN and other counties go. Kahit po nakakahiya sa mga nag-donate. Kung sa ganitong paraan, matutulungan natin ang mga nasalanta, then by all means, let’s do it.

For those who have the time, please try to volunteer sa DSWD warehouses. Getting in was not easy. A friend had to put in a word for us.

Please read on and good luck to us.

(This post was last edited Oct 22, 12:30 pm)

Kahapon, tinanong ng Philippine News si DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral:

Editor of Philippine News: Why are the relief goods in DSWD warehouses not moving?

DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral: Wala kasing volunteers.

This short interview was done over the phone. Philippine News wanted to hear her side pero ayaw niyang makipag-usap sa press.

I don’t want to accuse her of corruption but at the very least she is showing signs of being totally incompetent. We are in a state of calamity where every second counts. May namamatay araw-araw dahil sa sakit.

In my opinion, these deaths could have been prevented if Secretary Cabral had tried a little harder to do her job.

Deaths from Philippine storms nears 1,000

“Tropical Storm Ketsana left 420 dead and 37 missing when it flooded 80 percent of Manila on September 26, a disaster the government said affected 4.35 million people.

Some areas are still flooded three weeks later and 189,000 people remain in evacuation centres,

Typhoon Parma hit the northern Philippines on October 3 and lingered as a tropical storm for a week, triggering landslides that killed 438 people and leaving 51 missing mostly in mountain communities.

The government agency said Parma affected 4.16 million people, including more than 32,000 who remain at evacuation centres.”

During the first week after the storm, lumabas ang “bayanihan spirit” ng mga Pinoy. “Makatulong lang kahi’t konti,” katwiran nila.

kung walang volunteers, ano ‘to, komiks?

From Stella Arnaldo’s blog:

“At the offices of many civic groups and private organizations, hundreds of people showed up to volunteer in packing relief goods.

At the Tulong Bayan center at the Expo Centro in Cubao, Most of the volunteers were adolescents as young as 10 years old, along with their kuya or ate in high school and college.

They came in huge numbers, many of them barkadas, classmates or siblings, dressed just in their tees and shorts, wearing their Havaianas. All were just enthusiastic to do their share!

GMA asked world for donations

Our government begged the world for more donations. Sumagot ang buong mundo sa ating panawagan. In less than three weeks, dumaong ang mga barko, ibinaba mula sa mga cargo planes, i-diniliver ng mga trak at container vans ang sandamakmak na relief goods. Cash donations were in the millions of dollars.

But these donations must be coursed through DSWD

Nagpalabas ng directive ang pangulo. Individuals, private companies and other nations were ENCOURAGED to send their donations to DSWD. I blogged about it here and the video of her announcement here.

This PGMA directive sounded suspicious to me then. Now I know why. Here’s the story.

A group of eight people, your ate Ella included, went to one of DSWD warehouses to help in repacking relief goods. We know they need volunteers pero hindi namin akalaing WALANG TAO TALAGA SA LOOB NG WAREHOUSE!

As in sa isang humongous warehouse (1000++ sq.m) NA PUNONG-PUNO NG RELIEF GOODS HANGGANG BUBONG, ISANG DSWD employee lang at ISANG SECURITY GUARD ang tao!!

Kailangang magpa-register at i-schedule ang volunteering

1) UNICEF Registration (as a volunteer)

The warehouse can only take as much as 50 volunteers at a time or per shift. Here you will find that there is a 4-hour shift, and an option for a 6-hour shift for the volunteers to indicate their availability.

What “volunteers”? Nasaan?

Aside from the 8 of us? Nope, there was nobody there.

I know somebody who wanted to volunteer many times. She was always bumped off, laging nirere-schedule kasi “there were too many volunteers” daw. At tuwing Sunday lang daw puwede. What the hell is going on here?

The relief goods are not going anywhere

We arrived at about 8 am and left by midafternoon and yes, you guessed it right. Walang ibang dumating.

The relief goods are not moving. By the way things look, they are not going anywhere.

LET THE PICTURES DO THE TALKING

I wonder why.

image005
“Not a creature was moving, not even a mouse.”

image006
Parang haunted warehouse ang dating. May multo na yata.

image007

image008
At walang katapusang kaldero pa ulit

image009

Sayang ‘yung imported.

image013
Ano kaya ang laman nito? Hindi rin pinabuksan. Pang-special victim din kaya ito? (teka, dito nga pala galing ‘yung mga kumot)

image014
Mahiwagang mga kahon from Japan Aid.

image015
“Imported” are not included, we have concluded.

image016

image017
PORK AND BEANS? Yup, you’d think kasama ito sa relief bag. Pork and beans lang ‘to, puwede na sigurong ipamigay,

image018
Naaah! “Imported” pork and beans from Spain po ito. Sorry, hindi pa rin included

Now let’s take a look at what a victim will get from DSWD

image019
Look Ma, sampung lata ng sardinas! How generous! Kaldero ang unang ilalagay sa sako. Sabong panglaba (bar soap) at sampung sardinas sa ilalim. Siyam na sabon sa gilid ng kaldero. Local goods lahat syempre.

image020
Tapos papatungan ng isang tuwalya at isang pack ng sanitary napkin.

image021

image022
Last but not the least, lalagyan ng dalawang banig.

image023

image024

do not delay

YOU THINK?? WTF is the matter with these people? ISANG BUWAN!! Do you mean “do not delay ang dati nang delayed”?? Shet.

Halatang-halata.

Marami pang pabubulukin

image025
Wow! May bagong shipment na naman! At the rate DSWD is moving, next year na madi-discover kung ano ang laman ng mga kahong ito.

image026

“The first of two of the largest high-energy food shipments from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) arrived in the country two days ago for victims of storm “Ondoy” and typhoon “Pepeng.”

The biscuits were fortified with essential vitamins and minerals for supplementary feeding to children, pregnant women and the elderly in evacuation camps. Another 100 tons of biscuits will arrive on Oct. 24, in a continuing effort to provide food assistance to flood victims.

Conclusion

At nandoon pa rin sa loob ang mga imported relief goods, safe, sound and packed as the day they arrived.

Millions of dollars in donations, walang extrang pang-gasolina.

I’m sure they are more than willing to help. Time is of the essence. Huwag kayong suwapang.

You are the government. You have the power, the resources and the money. You just have to really care.

A Retractable USB Optical Mouse–my First Time Experience

My laptop has been with me for more than two years now and it has suffered major crash once in 2008. Although this story is not about my ASUS F3H series laptop, it is worth to note that it has already spent three optical mouse devices.

First to retire was the ASUS-brand mouse which was part of the original package of my laptop. Then, i harbored a JetTech-brand optical mouse from my PC which i bought from FastWin Enterprises. It didn’t last a year in my laptop. The third mouse i used was a Lenovo-brand which is also a part of the Lenovo laptop package of my niece. I had been using it until Tuesday night when it finally ran out of steam. All of the three mouse devices are made in China.

Now, for the first time, i am using a retractable USB optical mouse i bought from multi-media store CD-R King for only P150. Obviously, it’s again from China. It’s a CD-R King TM-8025 Retractable USB Optical Mouse with 3 buttons and 1 wheel.

mouse-1

Other specs:

  • USB interface (hi-speed certified)
  • 800 dpi high precision
  • Compact, ergonomic and comfortable design
  • Button-life up to 1 million clicks
  • Works with Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP/Vista

mouse-3

Negative side:

  • Not recommended on glass or mirror surface
  • Initially have trouble working with some of my USB ports (2 ports at the back) while it’s being installed and worked well with the other 2 USB ports on the side.

mouse-4

By the way, it took me several minutes cueing on a line at the CD-R King just to buy this affordable device. There’s no gain if no pain anyway. I’ll give you more reviews of this device as soon as it will happen and will post it here as an update to this article.

By the way, the touch pad of my laptop remains intact because it is seldom used. I find it harder tapping and clicking the touch pad than using a mouse.

A Dismal Display of Customer Relations in a SuperMarket

I bought a pack of rice at the Super Metro Mandaue on October 10, 2009 along with other grocery items. However, the bagger forgot to include the rice pack in my purchased items after paying it at the teller. I only discovered at around 3pm after my radio show in DYAB1512 that the rice pack wasn’t among the items i brought home. See the receipts below:

grocery right-1grocery receipt-2grocery receipt-3

Was it my fault? Definitely, it wasn’t mine but it’s the fault of the bagger since no one like me and you has time to check whether all the items we’re paying are all in the bag. It’s only logical for any customer to trust the bagger and the teller that all our paid items are there in the shopping bag.

I went back to Super Metro and claimed my left item. I was thinking beforehand to demand for rebates or incentives to compensate my efforts and money in going back to the supermarket. Upon presenting my complaint to the Customer Desk officer, i was turned over to an employee who i suspected is a supervisor for all the baggers. There was no other officer from the store who talked to me. Not even, the Customer Desk officer entertained me or asked questions about it. I was just simply referred to the guy.

Few minutes, the guy went back and handed over to me my rice pack. He apologized everything saying the bagger who failed to include the rice pack in my grocery items is newly-hired. I accepted the apology because the guy looked sincere and i walked out from the store.

It was a dismal display for a supermarket in entertaining such shortcomings of their people. They should have offered to me a rebate or incentive to pacify or comfort me. A caller in one of my radio shows said he was given a gift certificate by a supermarket in Consolacion when his bought item was also left behind in the store to please him. Why  SuperMetro is not doing that.

I’d read several stories abroad that their customers were given gift check due to an error caused by the store upon its customers. This is one way of getting back the loyalty of the customers who were not properly served in one instance. Rebates and customer incentives are not found in The Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394). It’s just a gesture of a company to retain repeat customers. :(
